Reverse Line Movement

I've been seeing this term thrown around a lot lately. Can someone explain to me what this means and the logic behind using it as an edge.

I believe this is where the line moves in the opposite direction of what the "public" is betting on.

So for example - if 80 % of the public was betting on the Bears, and the lines opened at -3 and then moved to -2 - that would be opposite line movement. It should have moved the other way to -4.

Make sense?

What would make this happen?


Either a Large $$ wager or a wager by a Respected (SMART) Bettor. The books try to keep even action on the game. So if 80% of the wagers are on team A at -3 and the line moves to team A -1.5 then the 20% that is on team B has wagered more $$ than the 80% that has wagered on team A. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I have been following this for just about a year in all sports so I know how it has been doing.
